Club a'Gogo

Welcome to the Club a'Gogo events page. We hope you will come along to one of our events in Newcastle. we host monthly Club a'Gogo events and ARCADIA Alternative club nights. We also hold a monthly market, the Handyside Alternative Market, but first let us tell you a bit about the original Club a'Gogo.

We have huge passion for promoting the mod culture and musical heritage of 1960s Newcastle. The original Club a’ Gogo was hugely important in the 60s and many iconic bands and stars first made their name at the club. The original Club a’ Gogo was located in the now demolished Handyside Buildings. Legendary bands played there such as The Animals (who even wrote a song about the club!), The Who, The Rolling Stones, Geno Washington, The Spencer Davis Group, Wilson Pickett and Jimi Hendrix to name but a few. American blues acts such as Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker and Memphis Slim also appeared there. Such was the intimacy of the club that the club goers were able to meet their idols close up, drink and to chat with them. The club was hot, sweaty and packed to the rafters most weekends. We lobbied for and were successful in a bid for a commemorative plaque at the site of the Club a'Gogo which will be unveiled this year.

We'd like to recreate a little piece of that magical time time when Newcastle was at the forefront of a thriving mod and R&B music scene. are writing a book about the Club a'Gogo and the mod scene of Newcastle and this should be published in 2022. In the meantime we hope you can join us at our friendly, non elitist mod club to dance, meet new friends and above all, have fun! See you there.
